Great to see the surge of interest in this years Wexford In Bloom Gardens Competition. In 2012 there were a total of 54 applications in all categories – in 2013 this has risen to 104 – a fantistic 93% increase!! See the chart below for the increases in applications across categories.
Wexford in Bloom are delighted to see the growth in entries for this year’s competition. We have increased participation in almost every category, as you can see from the graphic below. Thanks once again to everyone who entered!
The guys at visitwexford.ie have put together a brilliant short promotional video, titled “Wexford – So Old, So New” – take a look and see how many of our great attractions they managed to fit into just 1 minute 38 seconds!
As with many of the important things in life, the future of Biodiversity is in the hands of the next generation.
To this end, a “Biodiversity Action Day” was organized recently in Scoil Mhuire, Coolcotts, Wexford, where Mary Foley, from Wexford County Council’s Environment Department passed on some of her vast Biodiversity knowledge to a bunch of keen and enthusiastic youngsters.
Mary introduced a number of fun projects, and there were many wonderful paintings and sculptures of plants and animals created by the young participants.
As part of National Biodiversity Week, girls from Clonard Girl Guides, were in Redmond Park this beautiful sunny Saturday morning ( May 25th ) where they met Cliona Connolly, Environment Officer with Wexford County Council, and volunteers from Wexford Tidy Towns.
Cliona shared her vast knowledge of biodiversity with them and showed them how to build an Ant Hotel, plant seeds in diverse places, and many other related activities. I think it’s safe to say that a new generation of biodiversity-aware citizens will be continuing the good work in years to come.
34 people took part in the Wexford Naturalists’ Field Club’s Biodiversity Day walk around part of Wexford town. The highlight of the walk was the discovery, by one of our members, of a Swift nest in the wall at the front of the Borough Co. buildings. Now that we know that swifts are nesting in the vicinity the swift nest boxes, erected on the Old Jail, may be occupied sooner rather than later.
The Love Redmond Park group invites you to join them in Redmond Park on Friday next (May 31) at 10.30am for a complimentary cuppa and a chat. The occasion is EU Neighbours’ Day, an event which is celebrated by people all over Europe. The raison d’etre of Neighbours Day is a simple one: get to know your neighbour. Why? Well if for no other reason than “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know”! On a more serious level a strong community spirit is only as good as the links between individuals in the community. All it takes is a little more friendly communication and a willingness to lend a helping hand when its needed. Maybe think of your neighbourhood as an army and apply the maxim from Aesop’s Fables: “United we stand, divided we fall”!
This year’s Neighbours’ Day event will be officially launched by The Mayor, Councillor Jim Allen while local historian and writer Liam Gaul is this year’s guest speaker. As author of the recently published “Wexford: The American Connection” Liam will focus, in his talk, on our links with the USA.
